St Itas played host to Clyda Rovers in their second home game of this years Junior A Avondue / Imokilly Hurling League. Having played three games so far and coming close at the last two games St Itas were hoping for a good result today.

The great thing about this league is that most of the teams St Itas have played already are unknown to them and it is their first time playing these teams. With the pitch in great order thanks to Jim Griffin as always the ref threw in the ball at 6.30 on this clear bright evening.

St Itass got off to a great start getting two points on the board before Clyda Rovers responded with a long hopeful shot struck into their full forward li9ne. All went well but in the low evening sun Padraig O Brien in goal lost sight of the ball and it went straight into the net. but as it was early in the game St Itass didnt mind too much and had just under the hour to catch up. Within 5 minutes St Itas were ahead with a goal from Seamie Harnedy, and another withing a minute from Don O Rourke. However like the week before St Itas were giving away some frees which kept Clyda Rovers in the game when they scored their next 4 points all from frees.

the selectors made some changes as St Itas were playing into a strong wind and this seemed to settle the side a little. With out forward line working well with the midfield things were not so bad at half time when the two teams were very much on an even par. The score at half time was St Itas 2 goals and 4 points to Clyda Rovers 2 goals and 6 points.

After the break St Itas had a strong wind behind them and Padraigs puck outs were having a great effect from his very first puck out it made it into the hands of full forward Seamie Harnedy who was pulled down as he headed towards goal. He duly pointed the free and another a few minutes later to leave both sides level. From that point on St Itass were in a stronger positionwith Seamie Harnedy scoring several mroe frees. Clyda Rovers were still very much in contention with 10 minutes to go and were only 1 point down having scored another goal and two points since the break.

With ten minutes left on the clock St Itas scored another goal and followed this with three points to see them end the game with thier first victory in this league. The final score was St Itas 3 goals and 11 point to Clyda Rovers 3 goals and 8 points.

After the match both teams once again retired to the hall in Gortroe and were served up with tea and sandwiches. Once again a big thank you must go to Mary Ahern, Caroline O Brien for providing some sandwiches and to Fidelma Coleman and Cathy Harnedy who also made sandwiches and were in the hall making sure every one got a hot cup of tea.

Team Panel on the day Padraig O Brien, Michael Cronin, Neilus Filey, Finbarr Foley, Michael Cunningham, Warren terry, Paddy Ahern, Mark Coleman, Sean Gleeson, Gerry McCarthy, James O Hallorhan, Don O Rourke, Luke O Brien, Seamie Harnedy, John O Hallorhan, Brian Gaynor, Kevin Cotter, Declan Nugent, Kilian Swayne

Well done to all the lads.

On Saturday evening alst St Itass played host to a viasiting Castletownroche team in the Avondue / Imokilly Junior A hurling leage Section 1. On an evening when there was no wind or rain both teams lined out for this match. At 6.30pm Ref Ger Scully threw in the ball.

Like the last game St Itas had the team were up for this game on home turf and started brightly pointing the first score of the day. Castletownroche were not found wanting when it came to responding and like the previous game it was point for point with no side getting a lead of more then 2 points at any time before the opposing team would draw level.

With no wind advantage to either team the sides battled on until half time where both sides came off the field at the break level on a scoreline of St Itas 2 goals and 3 points to Castletownroche on 9 points.

The second half resumed very much the same as the first score for score in this very evenly matched contest. St Itas won a 21 yard free in the dying minutes of the game and took the point putting thime 1 point in the clear. From the resulting puck out Castletownroche won a free and they pointed this to draw level from the st Itas puck out they won a free which put them ahead in injury time they won another free which saw them go 2 points up and as the ball sailed over the crossbar the ref called time on the game.

Again the lads were dissapointed after working hard and holding there own throughout the game but sadly there was a lot of frees given away and at this level its worth points to the opposing team if the free is anywhere within striking distance.

The team panel on the day consisted of Padraig O Brien, Mark Coleman, Neilus Foley, Finbarr Foley, Michael Cunningham, Warren Terry, Paddy Ahern Ciaran O Brien, Sean gleeson, , Sean Supple, James O Hallorhan, John O Hallorhan, Gerry McCarthy, Seamie Harnedy, Luke O Brien, Kevin Cotter, Declan Nugent, Brian Gaynor, Mark Foley, Don O Rourke, Michael Cronin.

After the game both teams retired to Gortroe Hall where Tea and sandwiches were served. It was great to see both teams talking and relaxing in the local hall and to see our chairman serving tea well done Sean. However a big well done and thank you must go to Fidelma Coleman and Cathy Harnedy who were there to make sure everyone got something to eat and a hot cup of tea.

St Itas travelled to Buttevent on Sunday morning to play their second game in this division. Having lost the first game to a determined Ballygiblin last week the lads were keen to improve on their efforts.

The morning was bright, no wind in the sky and the pitch was in good condition. At 12.30 the ref threw in the ball and from that point on St Itas fought for every ball. The game was evenly matched and at half time St Itas were only 1pt up on a scoreline of St Itas 1 goal and 7 points to Buttevents 9 points. The second half was very much the same as the first with every point being matched by the other team.

With roughly 3/4 minutes left to go both sides were level and with a long range free dropping into the crowded square the ball was struck across the line for a goal. Despite the protests of the players and supporters for a square ball the ref and umpires gave the goal. With very little time left on the clock and St Itas a goal down things looked grim and they didnt change.

From the puck out Buttevent won a free which they duly put over the bar to seal the win and with the last puck of the game scored another free which saw them run out winners on a scoreline of 1 goal and 18 points to St Itass 1 goal and 13 points.

The lads were bitterly dissapointed with the result but for the selectors and management things were looking better as they lads put in a great effort and were holding their own for the most part.

Well done to the lads on the day

Team Panel on the day: Padraig O Brien, Mark Coleman, Neilus Foley, Finbarr Foley, Michael Cunningham, Warren Terry, Michael Cronin, Paddy Ahern, Ed Coleman, Sean Supple, James O Hallorhan, Gerry McCarthy, Alan Loughlin, Seamie Harnedy, Ciaran O Brien, Kevin Cotter, Declan Nugent, & John Hallorahan

After the match the team headed home for a much deserved cup of tea and dinner after their long trip up to Buttevent.

On Sunday afternoon last St Itas made the journey to Ballygiblin, just outside Mitchelstown to play their opening game of the Avondue/Imokilly Junior A division 1. With a few weeks training under their belt and still missing a lot of players through flu St Itas started this game well. With the scores being equally divided by both teams. Ballygiblin were first off the mark getting two points before St Itas replied and this was pretty much the scene for the first half with St Itas finding themselves down by a point at half time to a scoreline of 6 points to St Itas and 7 points to Ballygiblin.

With the throw in for the second half things for Ballygiblin improved within the first 5 minutes they had added a goal to their tally and two unanswered points before St Itas Rallied with three points of their own. But sadly Ballygiblin proved that theyw ere the stronger team on the day and continued to press forward with St Itas left with no choice but to try fight back from behind. With our main scorer on the day Seamus Harnedy, fresh from his recent outing with UCC doing his best it was not enough and sadly the St Itas lads ran out loosers on a score line of St Itas 1.13 to Ballygiblin 4.10

After the matc h both teams had Tea and Sandwiches which were provided by Ballygiblin and much thanks must go to them for their hospitality on the day. Our next match is away to Buttevant on Sunday 18th March and heres hoping the lads who were missing today are able to come back onto the panle for this next game. Following that we have a week off untill March the 31st when we play CastletownRoche at home in Pilmore.

A big well done to Jimmy Healy on his ‘Guinness World Records’ Attempt

On Sunday March 4th Jimmy Healy, 43-year-old physical therapist from Youghal, Co. Cork managed an amazing 2,796 press-ups in one hour – just over 600 short of the current record of 3,416 which is held by Canadian Roy Bergen. Jimmy who has a long association with the St Itas GAA from when Jimmy and his family donated the The Jimmy Healy Perpetual Tournament cup to the club several years ago as an incentive for an opener to their season. Jimmy has worked with club members over the years in his role as physical therapist at his clinic the “Jimmy Healy Physical Therapy and Sports Injuries Clinic ”in the Upper Strand area of Youghal and from time to time has been seen on the sideline at matches.

A large crowd gathered in the Town Hall, Mall Arts Centre to watch the Jimmy undertake the challenge, which was being organised to raise funds for the COPE Foundation. Originally Jimmy wanted to do the event for Bryn Bailey, the four year old son of good friends of his who has rare illness called Mitochondrial Metabolic Disorder and who attends COPE. However Bryn’s parents Vicky and Richard asked that Jimmy completes the challenge for COPE Foundation itself.

Jimmy who is no stranger to World record attempts when he and his team were involved in supporting and helping the members of Youghal United 5 aside world record last year, spoke of his disappointment at failing to set a new record. But he was buoyed by the fact that his efforts had helped to raise more than €10,000 for charity. ”I came close to the record during training but on the day it just didn’t happen. I felt relaxed and physically fine going into it but I fell behind very early on and just couldn’t catch up.”

Jimmy Healy world record attempt

Although Jimmy was disappointed at not making it into the iconic Guinness World Records book, he is delighted with the response to his fundraising efforts. The full amount raised is not yet known but more than €10,000 had been lodged by yesterday evening, and its expected that the final sum will far exceed that figure.

Donations to COPE Foundation in respect of Jimmy’s world record attempt can be made by calling 024 93799 or 086 8895266. Contributions can also be made at the event.

We must acknowledge the fact that two of St Itas players Seamus Harnedy and Padraig O Brien were both members of the UCC panel which won the Centenary Fitzgibbon Cup Final in dramatic fashion after a tight contest with CIT. Seamie started the game at number 12 and scored the first point of the game for UCC and contributed greatly to more scores in the first half, winning a free which was pointed and assisting in another shortly after. Padraig unfortunatly didnt get a run in this final, but as the second choice goalkeeper and number 16 on the program. It was going to be hard to get a run with the current form of Mc Carthy in goal. However it has to be said, both lads have been training hard and playing in many games in the lead up to the final and as members of St Itas GAA Club we are proud and delighted to have them on our own panel.

It was nip-and-tuck for much of the game, with little to choose between the two sides, until two goals for UCC’s Brian Hartnett and Dean Brosnan in the closing stages seemed to have secured the victory for the host college. Three points in arrears with six minutes of normal time remaining, UCC bagged late goals from substitutes Brian Hartnett and Dean Brosnan, but CIT forced extra-time through a Jamie Coughlan goal.

UCC looked strongest in the first period of extra-time, and led by 2-13 to 1-12 at the break. However, a Colm Casey goal and Coughlan point tied the game. The drama continued in extra time, as UCC pulled ahead but CIT refused to give in. The sides traded points late on as it looked like further extra-time would be required, and Aidan Walsh’s equalising point looked to have set up a replay before a last-gasp effort from UCC’s Corry delivered the vital score to send UCC players, management and supporters into raptures and claim victory by the narrowest of margins.

St Ita’s GAA - The year gone by

Well another year is over and its time to sit back and reflect on what the past year held in store. St Itas are probably one of the smallest clubs in the East Cork area and this year we fielded one hurling team at Junior level and despite the number of players lost to emigration and those away at work or in collage we managed to acquit ourselves quite well. At this point I think it only fair that we acknowledge all the help and support we got throughout the year from the East Cork Board and different clubs who helped us when the occasion’s arose in changing match fixtures, venues etc, we were not the only club facing the problems of player numbers being short and this year and sadly nearly every club was affected by emigration and or players having to stop playing because of work or school. St Itas would like to thank all the players, our coach, our selectors and club members, our sponsors and hard working committee but most of all St Itas wish to thank everyone who supported our club throughout the year at our matches, fundraisers and different club events.

2011 League

In a year that saw us step up to a new level of hurling in Division 2 of the Junior A league it was also a year that saw us bow out of the championship against Castlemartyr in Youghal at the quarter final stages having drawn Carrigtwohill for the first round and winning that game on a scoreline of St Itas 2-16 to Carrigtwohill’s 0-12, however Castlemartyr proved too strong for us in the Quarter Final with a scoreline of St Itas 1-11 Castlemartyr 3-13. The lads dusted themselves off and put in a great effort in the league with a great campaign over the summer months. We played 8 games in the league, winning 5 and drawing 3.
St Itas 3-12 V Dungourney 1-18, St Itas 3-14 V Bride Rovers 2-7, St Itas 3.18 V Carrig na bhFearr 3.15, St Itas 2.12 V Midleton 2.12, St Itas 1-19 V Sarsfields 0-11, St Itas 5-13 V Youghal 1-7, St Itas 2.15 Vs Killeagh 2.15 and St Itas 3.14 V Cloyne 2.13. This saw us through to a league final where we faced a strong and determined Bride Rovers on Sunday Oct 9th in Carrigtwohill. It was great to see Carrigtwohill’s pitch and fields all decorated with their colors after winning the County title. On the day Bride Rovers were just too good for St Itas with a final score of St Itas 1-11 Bride Rovers 4-12.

St Itas played Bride Rovers in Junior A Hurling Div 2 League Final on Sunday Oct 9th at 12pm the venue was Carrigtwohill GAA Pitch. Both sides have been promoted to Division 1 and will be part of the 2012 Avondhu/Imokilly Inter-Divisional Junior Hurling League Division 1.

On Sunday morning both teams lined up ready for the throw in, but for some reason the referee had not arrived and throw in was delayed until a replacement ref was found, by 25 past 12 the replacement ref Brian Murphy threw in the ball. Conditions underfoot were good, the pitch was in excellent order and looking around the field you could see the flags still flying as Carrigtwohill were still proudly celebrating their Senior County win with no rain and a very mild breeze all things pointed to a good game.

From the throw in Brider Rovers were fighting for every ball and Padraig O Driscoll notched up the first point for the Rovers lads. However Itas started to work the ball a little better and within the first 5 minutes Seamie Harnedy at full forward for Itas had scored 4 unanswered points. Rovers from the puck drove a long ball up the field nad won a 21 yeard free. St Itas lined the goal but with the rovers man standing over the free everyone expecting a straight shot at goal he scooped the ball up to the onrushing number 12 who caught it and struck it home for a goal. this brought both sides level. As the game progressed Rovers were gaining ground and were getting very much on top and Itas were finding it hard to close them down. on the 20 min Eoin Murphy at number 13 collected a ball and passed two Itas players before driving the ball into the Itas net. From the puck Seamie Harnedy collected the ball on the 45 and drove it over the bar leaving Itas 4 points behind. For the next few minutes leading up to half time the sides were evenly matched with Harnedy scoring another 2 points and Rovers another point to leave the side going in at half time St Itas three points down with a score of 7 points to Bride Rovers 2-4.

From the restart Rovers went on the attack and in the first four minutes of play had scored a further 2 goals and a point leavng Itas Shell Shocked and behind by a big margin. Rovers pressed on and scored another point before Alan Loughlin received a red card leaving Itas in an impossible position of being well behind and a man down. But Itas started to play well and with Seamie HArnedy being fouled every time he won possesion it wasnt long before Itas won a 21 yard free. Goalkeeper Padraig O Brien stepped up and drove the ball home giving Itas a glimmer of hope however from the puck out Rovers again scored a point and they followed this up with another before Gerry McCarthy scored his first point of the day. It was very much a see saw affair with rovers matching Itas point for point Beller Cronin got his name on the score sheet before Harnedy added another and in injury time Rovers added a further 2 points before Gerry McCarthy got Itas final score of the day.

The ref blew the final whistle and it was over. A long year for Itas who did themselves proud by reaching the league final but on the day they were not strong enough to beat Bride Rovers who had played well from the start of the game. The final score was St Itas 1-11 Bride Rovers 4-12

Well done to all the players who put in the effort all year and to our depleated panel of 19 players who finished out the year for St Itas. Sadly the players we lost as the year went on throught emigration and work proved a step to far for this club who being the smallest in the region found it hard to compete with the bigger clubs, but in fairness compete they did and managed to get to the final stages of the league before succumbing to Rovers.
Both sides have been promoted to Division 1 and will be part of the 2012 Avondhu/Imokilly Inter-Divisional Junior Hurling League Division 1.

On Saturday afternoon last in Pilmore St Itas faced Cloyne in the final league match of the year for St Itas. St Itas needed a win in order to progress any further this year, a draw or a loss would see their run in this years league come to an end. A draw or win for Cloyne would see them progress instead. On a very wet evening in Pilmore the ref Michael Welsh threw in the ball at 5pm. Itas very mush understrength faced into a mild breeze in the first half.

Cloyne started well winning a free in the first min on the 45 to see them go into a one point lead. from the puck out they again won their second free fromt he same area and again this was pointed putting them 2 up in the first 5 mins. From the puck out however Seamie Harnedy got on the end of a great pass and rounded the full back and blasted the ball into the cloyne net bringing St Itas ahead. From the Cloyne puck out The ball was played into corner forward Ciaran O Brien who pointed for a second score in the space of a minute.however Cloyne fought back and won two more frees in a row to bring the sides level on the 20 min mark. From a good puck out from Padraig O Brein St Itas went on the attack and when the forward was brought down inside the 21 it was a clear 21 yard free whcih Padraig O Brein took. with conditions wet he struck the ball low and it rattled the back of the net. However Cloyne didnt get this far in the league by laying down and the responded well with 4 points in a row unanswered to bring them back into contention. Alan Loughlin having a good game got a great point in the 24 min of the half before Cloyne again were awarded 2 more frees in a row which were converted. on the stroke of half time Cloyne finished strongly with their full forward getting a vital goal in the last minute to see the sides going in at half time St Itas 2-3 to Cloyne’s 1-10

The second half saw St Itas make some changes to the team and pushed Sean Supple from full back into centre forward and within 2 minutes of the restart it paid off when a high ball into the fullforward beat both him and the fullback to see Sean Supple running in behind both players to drive the ball into the cloyne net. for the next 10 minutes St Itas battled hard and Don O Rouorke added a point but Seamie Harnedy got some freedom when he was moved out of full forward to get 4 points in a row and one from a free before corner forward Kevin Cotter added his first score of the day. Cloyne fought hard and they managed to pull back 3 more points in the half but Seamie Harnedy was on a run and managed to get a further 4 points to finish out the game with St Itas 3.14 to Cloynes 2-13.

Well done to the lads this puts them in contention for a league final and with the points and goals scored leaves them topping the league table at the end of the year. They will now face Bride Rovers in a league Final and a chance to go up a grade next year.

On Tuesday evening the long awaited clash between near neighbours St Itas from Gortroe and Youghal Junior hurling teams finally took place. This local derby was to take place in Copperalley in Youghal. the evening was not kind to both sets of teams as there was a strong wind and bright setting sun into the faces of St Itas for the first half.

St Itas opened the scoring in the 3rd minute when a ball crossed in across the square by Seamie Harnedy reached corner forward Kevin Cotter who pushed the ball into the net past the outcoming keeper. However Youghal responded straight away with a strong wind advantage they managed to win a 65 which they converted. On the puck out the ball was played up the field to Seamie Harnedy who collected the ball between the 45 and 21 and turned and ran straight at goal driving a low shot past the keeper who had no chance. Youghla kept up the pressure and scored three points in a row before St Itas again got a point from midfielder Don O Rourke. Youghal once again responded by taking a well worked point from the puck out to keep them in touch. For the next 6 minutes it was all St Itas who kept plaing great balls into full forward Seamie Harnedy who managed to get three unanswered points before getting his first goal of the day. However Youghal were not letting up and with constant pressure on the St Itas full back line won a 21 yard free. Youghal opted to shoot for goal but the ball was stopped on the line and driven out the field where Neilus Foley was on the receiving end of a great pass to drive the ball over the Youghal Cross bar. From the puck out Youghal won a penalty which they again opted to go for goal, but once again the St Itas goalkeeper Padraig O Brien managed to get his hurl in front of the ball to make another save. From the clearance Youghal kept pushing and were rewarded when full forward got the ball at the edge of the square and buried it into the St Itas net. With time running coming to an end for the first half the ball was once again played into Seamie Harnedy who got his second goal of the day before the ref blew for half time. The teams left the field at half time to a scoreline of St Itas 4gls and 5pts to Youghals 1 gl and 6pts.

At the resumption the wind had died down a little but no0t before Padraig O Brien took a long range free for St Itas and put the ball over the crossbar. Youghal responded by getting a point but sadly this was to be their last score of the game. Seamie Harnedy and the forward line were doing damage to the Youghal Back line and in the next 15 minutes they scored 6 unanswered points with Seamie getting 3 Don O Rourke Alan Loughlin and Neilus Foley getting one apiece . St Itas with about 10 mintues to go brought on their first Sub and John Hallorhan was doing well in at corner forward before St Itas brought on their second Brian Gaynor came on at half forward they still pushed Youghal hard and kept the ball in the Youghal half and hitt several wides before Alan Loughlin got his point with 5 minutes to go St Itas brought on their final sub Shane Supple in to replace Sean Supple at the edge of the square and he got the final score for St Itas when Seamie Harnedy hit in a great diagional ball across the square from the 45 to the waiting Shane Supple who caught the ball turned and blasted it to the net from the edge of the big square. from the puck out the ref blew for full time and the final score was St Itas 5 gl 13 pts to Youghal 1 gl and 7 pts.

On Friday evening last St Itas traveled to Riverstown to play Sarsfield in a Junior A league hurling match. The game was scheduled for an 8.30pm throw in under lights at the fantastic Sarsfield venue. The evening was mild, with no breeze and conditions were perfect on the pitch. St Itas traveled needing to win this match after the loss in the championship and a recent draw to Midleton at home.At 8.30 ref Ian O Brien threw in the ball, the first 10 minutes were very much nip and tuck as both sides got used to the speed of the ball under lights and the scoring was low. Itas opened the scoring with two points before Sars replied with a point from play and a free which was converted. then Itas started to play hurling opening up the play and passing the ball. They had another three points on the board before Sars replied with another close in free. Don O Rourke and Alan loughlin were causing problems to the Sars defence with Seamie Harnedy benifiting from the work his forwards were doing around him. He took a pass from Loughlin and scored the only goal of the game giving the Sars goalkeeper little chance with his well struck shot. he added two more points before the half time whistle to leave the sides St Itas 1-10 to Sarsfileds 0-5

The second half saw both sides settle down into a good game of hurling with many open passages of play where scores were traded one for one, Sean supple and John Halloran got their name on the score sheet in the second half with Sean Supple scoring two great long range points from the middle of the field and John Hallorhan was unlucky to see his goalbound shot deflected over the bar for a point. with about 10 mins gone in the second half Itas were well ahead and looking comfortable so they used the sub bench to give some of the players a run out. the game finished with St Itas adding severl more points from Alan Loughlin and Seamie Harnedy to win in the end on a scoreline of t Itas 1-19 to Sarsfields 0-11

St Itas: Padraig O Brien, PAddy Ahern, Martin O Brien, James O Hallorhan, Michael Cunningham, Warren terry, Finbar Foley, Michael Cronin, Don O Rourke, Ciarina O Brien, Sean Supple, Alan Loughlin, John O Hallorhan, Seamie Harnedy, Kevin Cotter, Shane Supple.
